Uma Chetry has been named the replacement for Yastika Bhatia, who has been ruled out of the 2025 Cricket World Cup.

In a significant setback for Team India ahead of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury. The news comes as a huge blow, given Bhatia’s consistency with the bat and safe hands behind the stumps in recent years.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the development today, announcing that Uma Chetry, the young wicketkeeper-batter from Assam, will replace Yastika in the World Cup squad.

Bhatia, who has been an integral part of India’s limited-overs setup, was expected to play a crucial role in the middle order. However, medical assessments revealed that she would not recover in time to participate in the showpiece event.

Chetry, on the other hand, has been a rising star in domestic cricket and age-group tournaments. Known for her agility behind the stumps and attacking batting style, she has impressed selectors with her performances in domestic competitions and India A fixtures. As India gets ready for the big tournament, her addition provides them with a new wicketkeeping another option.

A BCCI spokesperson said:

“It is unfortunate that Yastika will miss out due to injury, but the medical team has advised rest and rehabilitation. Uma Chetry has shown promise and will join the squad immediately. We are confident she will seize this opportunity.”

The Indian women’s team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, will be aiming to clinch their maiden World Cup title. Despite the setback, the inclusion of a young and energetic talent like Chetry could bring a new spark to the side.

The Cricket World Cup 2025 will see the top women’s teams compete for global glory, and India’s campaign will begin with their opening match in early October. Fans will be hoping the team can rally together and deliver strong performances despite this early setback.
