Tristan Stubbs Takes Charge of Sunrisers Eastern Cape Ahead of SA20 Season

In a major leadership reshuffle, Tristan Stubbs has been named captain of Sunrisers Eastern Cape for the upcoming SA20 2026 season. The 25-year-old South African batter takes over the reins from Aiden Markram, who will now represent Durban’s Super Giants after being picked up for a record-breaking R14 million in the recent auction.

Sunrisers made an aggressive attempt to retain Markram, using their Right-to-Match (RTM) card at R12.4 million, but were ultimately outbid by Durban. The move left the Eastern Cape franchise searching for a new leader—and they’ve turned to Stubbs, one of the most exciting young talents in South African cricket.

Stubbs, who has been part of the Sunrisers core since the league’s inception, will now step into a much bigger role. Known for his power-hitting in the middle order and calm temperament, he will be tasked with leading the defending champions in a highly competitive tournament.

Batting coach Russell Domingo confirmed the decision, stating that Stubbs has earned the respect of the dressing room and is ready to take on the leadership mantle. This change also marks a new chapter for the franchise, which has enjoyed stability under Markram’s captaincy across the first three seasons.

With Stubbs at the helm, Sunrisers Eastern Cape will look to continue their winning legacy and defend their title, while Markram’s switch to Durban sets up an intriguing rivalry for SA20 fans.
