The Melbourne Renegades retire jersey No. 5 as Aaron Finch gets to say farewel

The Melbourne Renegades gave their former skipper Aaron Finch a fitting farewell before the Melbourne derby against the Stars in the Big Bash League 2023–24 match at the Docklands Stadium.

The Renegades decided to retire his jersey No. 5. It was also the first time that a jersey in the BBL was retired. The venue also had "Thank You, Finchy” on the stands all around. Finch’s daughter Esther was also present with her father at Marvel Stadium. The entire stadium was painted red, the color of Renegades, to honor Finch.

Earlier, the 37-year-old Finch announced his retirement from the BBL and T20 cricket, pulling the curtains down on his 15-year-long career.

Finch said that he has enough confidence in the ‘next generation’ of players to take Australian cricket to greater heights in the future.

Before the match against the Stars, Finch said, “It’s time to move on, and the next generation of players coming through is seriously good, so it’s in good hands.”
