Cricket Scotland and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have begun formal discussions to create a unified Team GB cricket squad for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, marking cricket’s Olympic return after 128 years. The move comes as the International Olympic Committee confirmed cricket’s inclusion, with six-team men’s and women’s T20 tournaments planned. Each team will have a 15-member squad, and qualification is expected to be based on ICC T20I rankings, though the exact process is still being finalized.
Trudy Lindblade, Cricket Scotland’s chief executive, confirmed ongoing talks with the ECB, emphasizing a strong working relationship and the shared aim to establish a Team GB cricket entity, in line with the British Olympic Association’s requirements. This would allow Scottish players to join forces with England, offering new opportunities for both nations and increasing cricket’s visibility on the global stage.
The ECB has expressed enthusiasm, viewing LA 2028 as a major chance to grow the game and inspire new audiences, especially with England and Wales set to host World Cups in 2026 and 2030. The collaboration mirrors the Olympic tradition of UK athletes competing as Team GB, and follows the BOA’s push to unify British teams across sports for the Olympics
