Suryakumar Joins NCA, Targets Asia Cup Comeback

Surgery and Recovery Timeline

The Mumbai stalwart underwent sports hernia surgery in early June in Munich, Germany, marking his third operation in three years—previous procedures included ankle and prior hernia surgeries. In the days following, he posted on social media:

“Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower right abdomen… After a smooth surgery, I’m already on the road to recovery. Can’t wait to be back.”

NCA Rehab and Asia Cup Aspirations

Suryakumar’s admission into the NCA for fitness assessments and rehab has spelled uncertainty around his availability for the West Zone Duleep Trophy squad—a tournament set to begin around late August 2025. His decision to focus on full recovery and Asia Cup readiness led selectors to omit him from the West Zone side, which is led by Shardul Thakur.

This proactive rehabilitation effort is aimed at ensuring he regains full match fitness ahead of the Asia Cup 2025, scheduled in the UAE from September 9 to 28. Multiple sources confirm India’s hopes of having him captain the side in his first multi-team tournament as skipper.

India T20I Captain's Journey

At age 34, Suryakumar has become synonymous with high-impact T20I batting. Fresh off a sensational IPL 2025 season, where he amassed 717 runs at an average of 65.18 and earned the Most Valuable Player award, he smashed records—including surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s 700-run tally for Mumbai Indians in a single IPL season.

He has captained India in T20Is since June 2024 and is a proven match-winner under intense pressure. His absence from domestic duties is seen as a calculated trade-off to maximize his availability and leadership role in the upcoming Asia Cup.

Signs of Progress

According to reports, Suryakumar’s rehab at the CoE (Centre of Excellence) will include daily physiotherapy, strength training, and regular fitness evaluations to ensure he can return to peak condition on time. Sources close to the team indicate optimism that he will regain form before the continental championship.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer made a brief visit to the CoE for routine fitness assessments and is expected to feature in the Duleep Trophy unless selected late for Asia Cup duties.

What It Means for Team India

Suryakumar’s presence or absence will significantly affect India’s T20I side. As captain and one of the team's most consistent performers, his leadership will be a crucial asset. His rehab prioritization reflects India’s intent to field a fully fit and mentally focused leader in the Asia Cup.

Selectors and coaching staff believe the wait will be worth it: in peak form, Suryakumar can shape the tournament, both as a run-scorer and a strategic skipper.

Outlook

With the Asia Cup opener just over a month away, Suryakumar’s fitness trajectory at the NCA will be closely monitored. His return could mark the perfect blend of leadership and performance for India as they bid to lift the title under his captaincy.
