In terms of series totals, Gill scored over 750 runs, second only to the great Sunil Gavaskar. The Asia Cup is a brief T20I competition; therefore, it makes sense that those runs occurred in five-day matches. He scored an incredible 650 runs in the IPL as well, but they were as an opener, and the selectors are probably going to continue with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson as they are.

A third opener is always welcome, and Gill's name will undoubtedly be spoken, but Yashasvi Jaiswal is a serious candidate.
