Sanju Samson, Rajasthan Royals’ captain and wicketkeeper-batter, has expressed his admiration for MS Dhoni, revealing how he always aspired to learn from the legendary cricketer. Samson, who debuted for India in 2015, began receiving consistent opportunities only after Dhoni’s retirement in 2020. He shared that playing against Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL provided him chances to seek advice and strengthen their bond.
A turning point In their relationship came during an IPL 2020 match in Sharjah, where Samson scored 74 runs, earning the Player of the Match award. Following this performance, he had an enriching conversation with Dhoni, which marked the start of a deeper connection. Reflecting on this, Samson said, “Like every young Indian cricketer, I always wanted to be around MS Dhoni. It was a dream to sit and talk to him about how he does things.”
Samson added that their bond has grown over time, and he continues to meet Dhoni during events and shoots, describing it as a “blessed feeling.” Currently recovering from a finger injury sustained in February, Samson is gearing up for the IPL 2025 season as Rajasthan Royals prepare to face Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23.
