Ross Taylor Comes Out of Retirement to Represent Samoa in T20 World Cup Qualifiers

In a stunning development, former New Zealand cricket legend Ross Taylor has announced his return to competitive cricket. The veteran batter, who retired from international cricket in 2022, will now represent Samoa in the upcoming T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific regional qualifiers.

Taylor, widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s greatest-ever batters, brings a wealth of experience to the Samoan side. Over the course of his illustrious international career, he played 112 Tests, 236 ODIs, and 102 T20Is, scoring more than 18,000 international runs. His presence in the Samoan squad is expected to give a huge boost to the team’s chances in the qualifiers.

Born in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, to a Samoan mother, Taylor has always been proud of his heritage. By donning Samoa’s jersey, he is not only extending his cricketing journey but also reconnecting with his roots.

Speaking about his comeback, Taylor said:

“I have always been proud of my Samoan heritage, and this is a special opportunity to give back to the game in the Pacific region. Representing Samoa on the international stage is something I’m really looking forward to.”

The qualifiers, set to be held later this month, will see several Pacific nations battle it out for a spot in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Samoa’s inclusion of Taylor provides them with a strong middle-order option and invaluable leadership on and off the field.

Cricket Samoa has hailed Taylor’s decision as a historic moment for the nation’s cricketing journey, believing his involvement will inspire young players across the Pacific.

Fans across the globe are eagerly waiting to see one of the modern-day greats back in action, this time representing the country of his ancestry.
