Rashid Latif: "No Comparison—PSL Now Trails IPL and Global T20 Leagues"

Former Pakistan cricketer Rashid Latif has dismissed the ongoing PSL vs IPL debate, branding the Pakistan Super League (PSL) as a "small domestic event" compared to the Indian Premier League (IPL). While speaking on a Podcast, Latif stated there is "no comparison" between the two, emphasizing that the IPL stands as the premier global T20 league, while PSL now lags behind, not even ranking among the top five leagues worldwide. He cited the rise of other tournaments like the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), SA20, The Hundred, and ILT20, noting these have surpassed the PSL in terms of player payments and popularity, pushing PSL to sixth position.

Latif criticized efforts to portray PSL as bigger than IPL, calling such attempts misleading, and highlighted the lack of growth in player remuneration and management instability within the PSL as key factors in its decline. He also pointed out that the IPL’s financial muscle, global appeal, and professional management have allowed it to continually expand, while PSL has regressed into a local tournament. Meanwhile, the IPL’s official broadcaster is targeting record revenues for the 2025 season, further underlining the gulf between the two leagues.
