Jos Buttler Stepped Down as England Team Captain

Jos Buttler has stepped down as England’s white-ball captain following the team’s disappointing early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The announcement came on Friday, February 28, in Karachi, a day before England’s final Group B match against South Africa. This decision marks the end of Buttler’s tenure as ODI and T20I captain, a role he took over from Eoin Morgan in mid-2022.

England’s campaign in the Champions Trophy was marred by poor performances, including defeats to Australia and Afghanistan, which eliminated them from semi-final contention. The loss to Afghanistan, an eight-run defeat in Lahore, was particularly shocking and extended England’s losing streak to seven matches under Buttler’s leadership. The Champions Trophy is the third consecutive ICC tournament where England has failed to reach the knockouts.

Buttler admitted after the Afghanistan match that it was time for introspection, stating, “I need to consider all possibilities… I’ve got to work out personally if I am part of the solution or not.” Critics, including former captains Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain, had questioned his leadership, suggesting a change was overdue.

Despite his struggles as captain, Buttler remains one of England’s most talented players. His resignation opens the door for new leadership as England seeks to rebuild its white-ball dominance.
