Indian cricket legend ViratKohli added another feather to his illustrious cap during the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final against Australia in Dubai. The 36-year-old surpassed Australian great Ricky Ponting to claim the record for the second-most catches by a fielder in ODI history. Kohli, who took two crucial catches in the match, now has 161 catches in 301 ODIs, overtaking Ponting’s tally of 160. Only Sri Lankan legend MahelaJayawardene (218 catches) remains ahead of him on the all-time list.
Kohli’s record-breaking moment came in the 49th over when he caught Nathan Ellis, who attempted a big hit off Mohammed Shami’s bowling. Earlier, he had equaled Ponting’s record by dismissing Josh Inglis with a sharp catch. Kohli’s athleticism and safe hands have been pivotal for India throughout his career, further cementing his legacy as one of the greatest fielders in cricket history.
In the same match, India bowled out Australia for 264 runs, thanks to standout performances from Mohammed Shami (3/48), Varun Chakravarthy, and RavindraJadeja. Steve Smith and Alex Carey scored blistering fifties for Australia but couldn’t capitalize further. With Kohli’s brilliance in the field and India’s disciplined bowling attack, the Men in Blue are now well-positioned to chase down the target and secure a spot in the final.
