India’s mystery spinner, Varun Chakaravarthy, recently admitted that his bowling style may not suit Test cricket despite his interest in the format. Speaking on a podcast with Gobinath, he explained that his quick, medium-paced spin limits him to bowling a maximum of 10-15 overs per innings, whereas Test cricket demands sustained spells of 20-30 overs. Consequently, Chakaravarthy has chosen to focus on shorter formats like T20s and ODIs, where his unique skills have proven highly effective.
Chakaravarthy was instrumental in India’s recent Champions Trophy triumph, claiming nine wickets in three matches and finishing as the joint second-highest wicket-taker. His standout performance included a five-wicket haul against New Zealand during the group stage, showcasing his precision and ability to dismantle strong batting line-ups.
Reflecting on his career trajectory, the Tamil Nadu spinner expressed no regrets about transitioning from pace bowling to spin due to injury. He noted that Tamil Nadu’s spin-friendly pitches rarely favor fast bowlers, a factor that influenced his decision. Like RavichandranAshwin, Chakaravarthy reinvented himself as a spinner and has thrived in white-ball cricket.
