India Intensifies Crackdown on Pakistan-Linked Media After Pahalgam Attack
Following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 tourists, India has banned multiple Pakistani YouTube channels, including those of cricketers Shoaib Akhtar and Basit Ali, alongside shows like Caught Behind and Wasay Habib’s content. The move, targeting channels accused of spreading “provocative narratives” against India’s security forces, follows Home Ministry recommendations to curb misinformation.
Fancode, India’s official PSL 2025 streaming partner,has halted broadcast of the Pakistan Super League matches, severing a rare cricketing bridge between the nations. This decision compounds earlier measures like visa suspensions and diplomatic expulsions post-attack.
The banned channels, including Dawn News and Geo News, collectively boast 63 million subscribers. Attempts to access them in India now display a “national security” restriction notice. While Akhtar’s channel (3.5M subscribers) wasn’t initially listed, it was blocked under the order.
The crackdown underscores India’s zero-tolerance stance post-Pahalgam, combining digital censorship with sporting sanctions to isolate Pakistan diplomatically.
