IMPACT PLAYER RULE TO STAY, NO BAN FOR CAPTAIN’s FOR SLOW OVER-RATE

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season will retain the Impact Player rule, allowing teams to substitute a player during matches. This decision was confirmed during a captains’ meeting held by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on March 20, 2025. The rule, which has been a topic of debate since its introduction, aims to provide teams with strategic flexibility by enabling the introduction of specialist batters or bowlers as needed.

In addition to the Impact Player rule, the BCCI has lifted the ban on using saliva to shine the cricket ball. This ban was initially imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic but has been re-evaluated following discussions among team captains, many of whom supported its reinstatement. The decision is expected to enhance bowlers’ ability to achieve swing and reverse swing, adding an exciting dynamic to matches.

Furthermore, a new ‘Second Ball’ rule will be implemented in evening matches to address the challenges posed by dew, allowing umpires to introduce a new ball after the 11th over if excessive dew is detected. These changes are anticipated to significantly impact gameplay as the IPL 2025 season kicks off on March 22.
