Here’s Why ViratKohli to get only Rs 13 crore from his Rs 21 crore IPL salary

Virat Kohli continues to shine in the ongoing IPL season, reaffirming his status as a vital player for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Over the years, his IPL earnings have seen a remarkable rise. Starting in 2008 with a salary of ₹12 lakh, Kohli’s income grew to ₹8.28 crore between 2011 and 2013, ₹12.5 crore from 2014 to 2017, and ₹17 crore from 2018 to 2021. However, during 2022-2024, his salary dropped to ₹15 crore due to tax deductions. This season, Kohli’s earnings have surged by 40%, reaching ₹21 crore. Across all IPL editions, his cumulative earnings now stand at an impressive ₹179.70 crore.

As per Section 28 of the Income Tax Act, IPL earnings are categorized as income from business or profession, placing them in the highest tax bracket. Kohli’s tax liability includes a base tax of 30% on income exceeding ₹15 lakh (₹6.3 crore), a surcharge of 25% for income above ₹5 crore (₹1.575 crore), and a cess of 4% on the total tax amount (₹31 lakh). Despite these deductions, Kohli remains one of India’s highest-paid athletes, with his net worth estimated at over ₹1,000 crore, fueled by cricket earnings and endorsements.
