The injury occurred during a training session at the Kensington Oval in Barbados earlier this week, where the West Indies team has been preparing for their three-match ODI series scheduled to begin later this month in Lahore. Forde, 22, was attempting a diving fielding drill when he landed awkwardly on his right shoulder. Medical scans later confirmed the dislocation, ruling him out for at least four to six weeks.
West Indies team physio Dr. Denis Byam confirmed the news in an official statement:
"Matthew has sustained a dislocated shoulder that requires rest and rehabilitation. He will not be fit in time for the Pakistan series. We are closely monitoring his progress and will provide support to ensure he returns fully fit."
Forde's injury comes at a time when the young pacer was building strong momentum on the international stage. Having been impressed with his disciplined bowling in recent outings against South Africa and India, Forde was seen as a key part of the Windies' pace attack. His absence now leaves a gap in the bowling lineup that selectors will need to address swiftly.
In response to the injury, the West Indies Cricket Board (CWI) has named veteran all-rounder Keemo Paul as Forde’s replacement for the Pakistan tour. Paul brings experience and balance to the squad, but the decision also reflects the lack of depth in the Windies' pace reserves following injuries to other young bowlers like Jayden Seales and Obed McCoy.
Head coach Daren Sammy expressed disappointment at losing Forde but backed the team to adapt:
"Matthew's injury is unfortunate. He has been growing into his role and has shown great promise. But that’s part of the game. We have a talented squad, and I am confident the boys will step up and deliver."
The ODI series against Pakistan holds strategic importance for both sides, with ICC Super League points no longer at stake but team development for the 2027 World Cup being a key focus. The matches will be played under tight security and bio-secure protocols, given the extreme weather and geopolitical conditions in the region.
Forde will now return to Barbados for his rehabilitation under the guidance of CWI’s medical team. The injury also puts his participation in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in doubt, depending on his recovery timeline. He was expected to play a prominent role for the Barbados Royals this season.
With Forde sidelined, the West Indies will be hoping their pace battery, including Alzarri Joseph, Romario Shepherd, and now Keemo Paul, can rise to the challenge against a strong Pakistan batting lineup.
The first ODI between West Indies and Pakistan is scheduled for August 18 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
