Ex-CSK star suggests Dhoni should bat at number 3 to address struggles of the former captain

Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) player Robin Uthappa has suggested that MS Dhoni should bat at number three in IPL 2025 to maximize his impact. Speaking on a podcast, Uthappa defended Dhoni’s batting ability but acknowledged his tendency to take time to settle before accelerating. He explained that Dhoni’s approach, rooted in an era where players prioritized getting their “eye in” before attacking, contrasts with the current explosive nature of T20 cricket. Uthappa questioned whether it was realistic for Dhoni to change his style at this stage of his career, proposing instead that CSK adapt by moving him up the order.

Uthappa argued that batting at number three would benefit both Dhoni and CSK. He suggested that Dhoni could guide younger players by setting an example and imparting lessons they might not otherwise learn in the IPL. Additionally, he noted that if Dhoni were fatigued after playing a longer innings, Devon Conway could take over wicketkeeping duties. Uthappa emphasized that Dhoni’s slower starts are a natural part of his game and need strategic adjustments.

In IPL 2025, Dhoni has scored 0*, 30 (16), 16 (11), and 30 (26) across three matches. CSK coach Stephen Fleming previously defended Dhoni’s lower-order role, citing knee issues affecting his mobility.
