Eden Gardens Pitch Controversy: Curator Refuses KKR’s Request for Spin-Friendly Surface

Eden Gardens pitch curator Sujan Mukherjee has sparked controversy by refusing Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain AjinkyaRahane’s request for a spin-friendly pitch. Mukherjee cited BCCI guidelines, emphasizing that IPL franchises have no say in pitch preparation. He asserted that the surface already provides turn but stated he cannot fully accommodate KKR’s demands, as he is accountable for maintaining the pitch’s integrity. Mukherjee also noted that no official or player from KKR had formally approached him about specific pitch requirements before their opening loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Mukherjee’s stance has drawn criticism from experts like Simon Doull and HarshaBhogle, who argued that denying home advantage undermines KKR’s strategy, especially given their reliance on spinners historically. Doull even suggested KKR move to another venue for better conditions. Former Bengal cricketer ShreevatsGoswami added that Mukherjee’s reluctance to heed home team requests is not new, recounting similar experiences during his playing days.

Despite backlash, Mukherjee defended his position, stating that IPL rules do not mandate pitches tailored to franchises’ preferences. He dismissed criticism from commentators, saying he only minds feedback from spectators. The debate continues as KKR struggles to find consistency early in the IPL 2025 season.
