New Leadership, High Expectations
Saint Lucia Kings head coach and franchise icon Daren Sammy confirmed Wiese’s elevation to captaincy, describing him as an integral member of the team and a proven performer. “We cannot wait to start our first home game on August 23rd,” Sammy said, rallying supporters to “paint it blue” at the Daren Sammy Stadium.
Wiese succeeds Faf du Plessis, who led the Kings to their maiden CPL title in 2024 but opted out of the 2025 season to prioritize personal commitments and other competitions.
Wiese’s Legacy and Credentials
The 40-year-old all-rounder has been a consistent figure for the Kings since his debut in the 2021 edition. Across 26 matches, Wiese has amassed 338 runs and taken 36 wickets, delivering high-impact performances that contributed significantly to the 2024 title run.
Reflecting on his new role, Wiese expressed humility and determination:
“It is a huge honor to lead this team. I am incredibly honored to be your captain. We shall be playing with unity, passion, and heart this season. We shall give everything for you and each other. Fans, we need you with us to pack the stadiums, lift the vibe, and let’s paint Saint Lucia blue. Let’s make this a special season,” he said.
Aiming for Back-to-Back Glory
With the title in their grasp, the Kings are set to become the first team to clinch back-to-back CPL championships since the formidable Trinbago Knight Riders did so in 2017 and 2018. Wiese’s leadership will be key in guiding a squad aiming to replicate such an achievement.
CPL 2025 is scheduled from 14 August to 21 September, spanning six Caribbean nations, including Saint Lucia’s Daren Sammy Stadium, where Wiese will likely unveil his leadership in front of passionate local supporters.
With a new captain at the helm and a robust core built over recent seasons, the Saint Lucia Kings are undoubtedly ready to defend their crown. David Wiese’s blend of experience, leadership, and form signals a thrilling chapter ahead as CPL 2025 approaches.
