England Test captain Ben Stokes has resumed training with Durham, intensifying his preparations for the upcoming Ashes series against Australia, set to commence on November 21 in Perth. The 34-year-old all-rounder had been sidelined due to a shoulder injury sustained during the fourth Test against India in July, which led to his absence in the final Test at The Oval.
According to Durham head coach Ryan Campbell, stokes has made significant progress in his rehabilitation. "Over the last week, he's started to hit balls and had a really good session," Campbell shared with BBC Radio 5 Live. "The batting side of things is going very well, but the bowling will take a lot longer. He is being treated very steadily."
Campbell emphasized the importance of Stokes' full participation in the Ashes series, stating, "The guy is so good because he makes your batting line-up deep and is a genuine force as a third or fourth seamer."
In a related development, fast bowler Mark Wood, who has been recovering from knee surgery, is also nearing a return to action. Campbell expressed optimism about Wood's potential involvement in a County Championship match next week, which would be a significant boost for both Durham and England.
With the Ashes series approaching, the return of these key players is seen as a crucial step in England's bid to reclaim the Ashes in Australia.
