Bracewell to lead NZ in ODIs as Latham injured, after thrashing Pakistan in T20Is

New Zealand’s cricket team will be without Tom Latham for the upcoming ODI series against Pakistan due to a fractured hand sustained during training. Michael Bracewell will continue as captain, stepping in for Latham, who was initially set to lead the side in the absence of Mitchell Santner, currently participating in the IPL. Wicketkeeping duties will be taken over by Mitch Hay, while Henry Nicholls has been called up to join the squad.

Latham’s injury occurred when he was struck on the hand during practice, and X-rays confirmed the fracture, necessitating a cast and a recovery period of at least four weeks. Will Young will also leave the squad after the first match in Napier to support his wife as they prepare for the birth of their first child. In his place, 23-year-old Rhys Mariu, who boasts an impressive first-class average of 61.73, has been called up for his first international stint.

New Zealand coach Gary Stead acknowledged the need for flexibility due to player unavailability but emphasized that these changes offer opportunities for others. The ODI series begins on March 30, with New Zealand entering on a high after winning the recent T20 series against Pakistan 4-1 under Bracewell’s leadership.
