Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) spinner Ravi Bishnoi’s absence in the death overs against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) likely cost LSG the match, as CSK chased down 167 with five wickets in hand. Bishnoi, who had been LSG’s most economical and effective bowler with figures of 2/18 in three overs, was surprisingly not given his full quota of four overs by captain Rishabh Pant.
Speaking after the game, Bishnoi said he did not discuss the decision with Pant but understood that the captain, who also keeps wicket, had plans he wanted to execute. “I went to the wicket a couple of times, but he had plans in place. The captain is better placed to make such decisions,” Bishnoi said. Despite Bishnoi’s strong performance, Pant chose to rely on pacers like Avesh Khan and Shardul Thakur in the final overs, a strategy that backfired as CSK finishers MS Dhoni (26*) and ShivamDube (43*) took the game away.
Pant admitted he considered bowling Bishnoi in the last over but decided against it after discussions with teammates, aiming to “take it deeper.” However, the plan failed as CSK comfortably chased the target with three balls to spare. Bishnoi’s exclusion from the death overs sparked debate, as many captains have successfully used spin against Dhoni in similar situations.
