Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has advised captain Rohit Sharma to give the new ball to mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy in India’s Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final against Australia. Chakravarthy, who claimed a stunning five-wicket haul in India’s victory over New Zealand, could be India’s X-factor in the high-stakes match in Dubai.
In a video on his YouTube channel, Ashwin suggested that Chakravarthy should bowl over the stumps to Australian opener Travis Head with the new ball. “Head shows all his three stumps and clears his leg to hit over the field. Varun with the new ball might give India an edge. It will be a mouth-watering contest,” Ashwin said. He added that Head is likely to either go aggressive against Chakravarthy or risk getting dismissed cheaply.
Ashwin further advised India to win the toss, bat second, and aim to dismiss Head early, given his ability to dominate powerplays. Chakravarthy’s variations and recent form make him a key weapon for India, especially on Dubai’s spin-friendly pitches.
India’s strategy for this crucial match will likely revolve around their spin attack, with Chakravarthy expected to play a pivotal role as they aim for a spot in the final.
