Reports suggest that Rohit Sharma may have played his last Test match for India, with indications that he will not be selected for the Test squad again. Jasprit Bumrah is being considered as a potential successor, possibly taking over the leadership role during the England tour in June-July 2025.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly looking at Bumrah as the future Test captain, which influenced their decision to avoid taking risks with him ahead of the 2025 Champions Trophy. BCCI chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar faced a tough decision after receiving a medical report indicating that while Bumrah's scans were clear, he had not yet resumed bowling at full intensity.
Bumrah is expected to lead Team India in the upcoming England series, especially since he can return to play for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL before that. Rohit has struggled in recent Test matches, averaging below 25 in 2024 and contributing only 31 runs in five innings during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With India's poor performance under his captaincy, including a historic home whitewash against New Zealand, selectors seem prepared to move on from Rohit in Tests, with an official announcement anticipated soon.
