As per Report, Rohit Sharma’s future as India captain to be determined by Champions Trophy final result

The outcome of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final between India and New Zealand could significantly impact Rohit Sharma’s future as captain. The BCCI is keen on establishing stable leadership ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup and the next World Test Championship cycle. Discussions about moving on from Rohit as captain in ODIs and Tests are anticipated, with chief selector AjitAgarkar and head coach GautamGambhir already having addressed this with the board and Rohit himself.

Rohit, 37, has been asked to communicate his plans post-Champions Trophy. While retirement is his decision, the BCCI will reassess his captaincy role. Rohit understands the need for a stable captain to prepare for a World Cup. Shubman Gill, named as Rohit’s deputy in the Champions Trophy, is being groomed as a potential future captain.

The BCCI has held back on announcing new central contracts until after the final, indicating that significant decisions regarding team leadership are pending. Despite Rohit’s recent successes, including winning the T20 World Cup in 2024, the board’s focus is on long-term stability.
