The legendary batsman of the Indian Cricket Team, Sunil Gavaskar, praised Rohit Sharma for leading the team to the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup title, saying that the opener is a people captain just like Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Kapil Dev were. Rohit had been a member of the winning team in the 2007 India T20 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy as a captain. He finished as runner-up in the 2023 ODI World Cup and World Test Championship. But Rohit finally got his date with destiny when team India defeated South Africa by 7 runs in the finals of the T20 World Cup at Kensington last month.
Shortly after announcing his retirement from the shortest format of cricket, Rohit called the 2024 T20 World Cup victory, which India won as an unbeaten team in the competition, the greatest achievement of his playing career.
Gavaskar wrote in his column, "Rohit Sharma joins those other two cricket giants, Kapil Dev and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, as captains of team India to a World Cup trophy, like the duo where Rohit is also a people captain. Well, not only by his team members but by the entire Indian cricketing community, cricket fans also love his lakonic style of leadership, and tactically, he is as good as the sharpest in the game. Some of his moves can cost you money and make you scratch your head as to why, but the end result is more often than not exactly what the team needed at the moment."
